French Vocab #2

 In Paris

I’ve decided to write another post on French words, because the last one was such a hit, and because for some reason I’ve been thrown into hyper gear and have learned so much the past couple weeks.

Special thanks to all the people corrected me on the last one, I appreciate it! Toujours corrigez-moi, SVP!

Dessiner: To draw. Learned this one because the students/ teachers at my school were always so impressed with my Santa Claus doodle, (which is truly not that great,) – alors j’ai entendu beaucoup “Tu dessines bien!”

Je m’en fous: I don’t care

Aléatoire: Random

Il y a du monde: It’s busy/It’s packed

Chiant: Annoying. This one is a bit difficult, and was explained to me in French by a French person. It’s sort of a play on the word “Chiens” (dogs.)

C’est pas grave: It’s ok/It’s no big deal. I knew this one already, but I was using ’C’est pas important’ before I found out ’C’est pas grave’ was way more commonly used. Also, if any of you study French and are wondering where the ‘ne’ has gone for the negation: It’s not pronounced. And it’s not even typed out, in texting conversations. You sound more fluent if you don’t do it. For example: Je sais pas.

Je t’aime bien: I like you. When “Je t’aime” stands alone, it means “I love you.” Can be super creepy if that’s not what you’re trying to say. Which makes me wonder how you would tell someone you love them a lot

More words I already knew, but constantly forget:

Rappeler/Souvenir: To remember (Je rappelle/Je me souviens)

Améliorer: To improve

Apprendre: To understand/to learn

And because I am teaching kids English, all the vocab I teach them, I in turn learn in French. Here are some Christmas words:

Santa Claus: Le Pere Noël

Snowflake: Flocon de neige

Christmas Tree: Sapin de Noël

Snowman: Bonhomme de neige (which all my students will get really excited about and scream, “comme OLAF!” Because all kids here are obsessed with Frozen, or as it’s called here, La Reine des Neiges (The Snow Queen.)

This time I have to give the shout out to a pretty great French boy, who is sweet and patient and refuses to speak English with me.
